2005 S.U.P.A National Universities Championships
from Mike Hobday
|
23 sides took part in 3 divisions. Unfortunately, due to other commitments we were unable to play the Open at this tournament. However, the polo that was on offer was superb in all sections. New sponsors, Roxtons and Polo Skool will be impressed both by the standard and the friendliness of the competitors. In the beginners section, 8 teams took part and although St. Andrews University were in last position, the gulf between them and the team in 3rd, Edinburgh, was miniscule. The final though was a very close fought match between the strongest 2 sides by far, Exeter and London, with London running out the winners by 2-1. The novice section won this year by Reading University, for whom in particular ex-pony clubber, Stuart Watts was in magnificent form and despite the efforts of a strong RAC side, they took the title. Finally, in the Intermediate section, 6 very well balanced sides took part. Much to the surprise of many, a strong Warwick team could only manage 5th place, while Edinburgh and Exeter fought out the final. Despite Edinburgh playing well, with Nackvi, Warner and Law combining nicely, perennial champions Exeter held on to their title by 4 goals to 2. Thanks must go, for the
smooth running
of this tournament, to the umpires supplied by Lavinia Black, the
timing as usual by Pam Cowley and the facility of Inglesham Polo
Club, for whom Zoe and Paul Innes were instrumental. Thanks also to sponsors: Polo Skool and Roxtons.
