2005 S.U.P.A National Universities Arena Championships

from Mike Hobday

A record 49 teams, a new format, a step up in standard and heavier partying! What more could be asked for and expected? Well next year is another year. This year was just amazing, from the way Inglesham and others handled the ponies, the Umpires, catering for the masses, administration, sponsors and social, the event ran like clockwork with no more than a 20 minute delay on day 3.

The Rock ClubThe Rock Club, of Cirencester once again not only hosted all the students on Thursday night but also supported the Beginners Section. A record 18 teams showed that this section will continue to grow. The section was won in a thrilling final by Cambridge despite a strong late challenge by Bristol 2.

Willoughby Park Polo Gear supported the Novice Section and gave prizes to both Harriet Norris and Dean Kindom for their efforts with their teams in this section. A great final between Exeter University and 3 girls from London was narrowly won by the former.

The Polo TimesThe Intermediate Section was supported by The Polo Times and was won in style by London University with a narrow victory over a Ben de Rivas inspired Nottingham, due to various phone calls the previous night, this game was called the Test match, for those in the know!

The Open Section, supported by perennial sponsors Baileys Horse Feeds, attracted a record 9 teams, a surprise to all including the organiser who anticipated 3! From the first game it was obvious that form books were going out of the window as Oxford Brookes and the RAC both suffered defeats but Oxford University went from strength to strength and overcame all to win and secure the trophy.

Jilly Emerson, of SATS, had the unenviable task to choose someone from this section who in her eyes contributed most to their team, but her choice of Ellie Evans from Bristol received the accolade it deserved.

Prizes and momentoes were distributed to all players and photographer Michael Chevis very kindly gave photos of the winners and runners up to be fitted into the frames supplied as prizes. His photographs of all four days may be viewed here. There is a selection here.
