An entry of 26 teams saw a bright sunny morning dawn on 19th March at Longdole Polo Club for the National Girls' Schools Polo Tournament. SUPA were pleased to take over this extremely popular tournament originally run by Charles Whittington for the Cheltenham Ladies' College. Thankyou to the Ladies' College, and to Caroline Ralph in particular, for their continuing help and support. One of the things that the Ladies' College has done is to produce and print all the programmes for us this season.

The Ladies' Arena TournamentIn all 4 divisions the players excelled and they showed that ladies' polo is not for the faint-hearted - one player played two chukkas with a suspected broken hand. All the matches were fiercely contested. With only one chukka of 6 minutes in which to overcome your opponent there is no time to “mess about”. The match for the 3rd and 4th placing in Division 1 saw the goal of the day (if not the season). Clemmie St John Webster of Cheltenham College launched the ball from a good 50 metres out. It sailed over the heads of the St Mary's Calne team and landed in the goal to gasps and cheers.

The top two seeds met in the Final. Marlborough (Ciara Ephson, Matilda Woodd and Iona Sinclair) were rumoured to be the dark horses of the tournament but when they met Millfield they had no answers to the superior play of their opponents. Saffron Hutchinson directed play as she had done all day, her sister Georgina backed her up and Fifi Watson was a goal scoring machine.

The SUPA Ladies' Arena TournamentThis successful tournament brought the SUPA arena season to a close. Many thanks to Longdole Polo Club and all their most helpful and hardworking staff for hosting the tournament and to all the officials(umpires, time keepers, commentators etc) who made the tournament run smoothly. A special thank you to POUT (makers of extremely sought after make-up) who were the sponsors of this tournament and who are new to polo. Anika Betz, from Pout, gave out the most generous (and interestingly named!) prizes. Thank you to her and to POUT.
