Torrential rain does
not dampen Polo spirits!
Despite torrential rain and howling gales the

National Girls'
Schools Arena Polo Tournament was played at Longdole Polo Club on 4th
March 2007. Many thanks go to Bridget and Christopher Hanbury for their
generous hospitality - their arena playing surface being a great advert
for the name all weather, as it coped admirably with all that was
thrown at it on Sunday. Thank you to all who braved the lashing rain
with good humour, good grace and soaking wet clothes!!! Although the
weather deteriorated the play got better and better, finishing with a
cracking finale to the Championships. We welcomed two new schools,
Perse and Channing. We hope that they have now dried out and are
looking forward to more SUPA Tournaments, as we are looking forward to
seeing them again.
Division 3 consisted of nine teams and initially three American
Tournaments. After the first two rounds, the mathematical genius of the
time keeper and scorer, Pam Cowley and Jilly Emerson, were put to the
test as they had to work out the rankings on points, goal difference,
goals for and goals against. All the teams then played off for their
positions. The top two teams were Rugby C and Cheltenham Ladies'
College C. Cheltenham Ladies' defended tenaciously but couldnt stop
Rugby scoring three good goals to win Division 3.
Division 2 saw some good games. Heathfield St Mary's A fought their way
through to the Final to meet Rugby B. These two teams gave a very good
account of themselves. Both teams played fluid, sensible polo. The well
drilled unit of Heathfield St Mary's, though, powered through to win
4-1 in an exciting and entertaining final.
The final game of the Championships was between Marlborough A (Matilda
and Tabitha Woodd and Sasha Seymour Williams) and Cheltenham College A
(Clemmie St John Webster, Blair Abel and Sophie Kyriazi). The two teams
marked each other ferociously and players could only get away from
their markers if there was a split second loss of concentration, or
there was an unlucky bounce, or a pony decided to play football! The
play was fast and furious and of an excellent standard. For Cheltenham
College, Sophie marshalled the troops and closed the back door, Clemmie
played neat polo, turning the ball skilfully, and they were ably backed
up by Blair. For Marlborough, Tabitha took the ball to goal with aplomb
and Sasha worked her socks off in attack and defence. Matilda held the
team together and was a match for many a higher handicapped player. An
excellent final finished 4-3 in Marlboroughs favour and they were duly
crowned the

SUPA National
Girls' Schools Arena Champions for 2007.
Ellie Parkes was awarded the Most Promising Player as part of a highly
commended Rugby C team. Matilda Woodd was judged to be the Most
Valuable Player of the tournament.
SUPA would like to thank the Hanburys for their hospitality at Longdole
and Bridget in particular for presenting the prizes.

, the prestigious
make-up company, very generously sponsored all the prizes -
the Division 3 winners are now the proud owners of Perfect
Kisses, Division 2 will be Indulged Forever and the champions have Show
Me Love! Dan Banks was again our all weather umpire! Caroline Ralph
of The Ladies' College kindly produced all the programmes for the
tournament as she does for all our tournaments and we thank her for all
the time and effort that she puts into this.
